His career began with a single dining room on Park Avenue. What followed was more than three decades inside extraordinary homes—and relationships with families that would endure for years.
After studying in Switzerland, Javier Chacone arrived in New York City in his early twenties determined to become an interior designer. But established firms were reluctant to entrust significant projects to someone so young.
Rather than wait for an opportunity, he found another way into the extraordinary residences he hoped one day to design.
Javier joined a group of professional painters working throughout Manhattan's Upper East Side. There, he learned interiors from the surface inward—color, preparation, texture, proportion, light and the craftsmanship hidden beneath a beautifully finished room.
Painting led to decorative treatments, Venetian plaster and increasingly sophisticated architectural finishes.
Then came Mrs. Goldfarb.
She entrusted the young Chacone with the dining room of her Park Avenue residence. The highly customized interior incorporated exquisite hand-painted Gracie wallcoverings, individually specified in colors selected for the room, along with architectural detailing, specialty finishes and carefully considered furnishings.
That dining room changed the trajectory of his career.
Mrs. Goldfarb trusted him again. Her family did too. Eventually, Chacone would work with her sister in South Florida, beginning a relationship with the family that continued for more than a decade.
It established a pattern that would repeat throughout his career: one project became another, one residence became several, and clients frequently became longtime friends.
The Designer Who Never Put Down the Brush
Success never separated Chacone from the craft that introduced him to design.
More than three decades later, he still loves to paint. He still works with plaster. And when a project calls for it, he remains perfectly comfortable working with his own hands.
For Chacone, design and craftsmanship were never separate disciplines.
He understands how a finish is actually created because he has spent decades creating them. He understands how texture reacts to light, how preparation affects the final surface, and how an architectural detail moves from an idea into something tangible.
That hands-on knowledge continues to shape the way he designs today.
A Private Practice Across Extraordinary Places
Relationships and referrals eventually carried Chacone far beyond Manhattan.
His work expanded through the Hamptons, Greenwich and Scarsdale; Alpine, Englewood Cliffs, Short Hills and Mendham; Beverly Hills, Montecito, Santa Barbara, Rancho Palos Verdes, Palo Alto and Atherton; and the private Seattle-area communities of West Bellevue, Medina, Yarrow Point and Hunts Point.
His work has also taken him to Park City and other parts of the United States, as well as Zürich, Brussels, Luxembourg and Costa Rica.
South Florida—and particularly Palm Beach and its surrounding communities—eventually became an important part of his practice.
Over the decades, the practice itself evolved as well. Gorgeous Homes, Chacone's original company, was followed by subsequent identities as markets and positioning changed, eventually leading to Flawless Interior Finishes.
The names evolved strategically.
The designer, experience and relationships behind them remained continuous.
Privacy by Instinct
Chacone never pursued the path of the celebrity designer.
He deliberately maintained a personal practice, remaining close to his clients and the work itself.
Some clients entrusted him with multiple residences. Professional relationships sometimes developed into genuine friendships lasting many years.
And despite working inside extraordinary private homes, Chacone never believed that access entitled him to publicize the people who lived there.
Some designers build highly visible public profiles. Javier Chacone built private relationships.
Much of his work therefore remained exactly what it was intended to be: private.
More than three decades after Mrs. Goldfarb first trusted a young designer with her Park Avenue dining room, Chacone still approaches his work with much the same philosophy.
He still notices the finish on a wall.
He still enjoys picking up a brush.
He still believes being invited into someone's home is a privilege.
And he remains more interested in the people living inside a residence than in seeing his own name attached to it.
Javier Chacone built a career not around being seen, but around being trusted.
