His career began with a single dining room on Park Avenue. What followed was more than three decades inside extraordinary private residences—and relationships with clients that often endured for years.

After studying in Switzerland, Javier Chacone arrived in New York City in his early twenties, determined to become an interior designer. When established firms were reluctant to entrust significant projects to someone so young, he found another way into the remarkable homes he hoped one day to design.

Working alongside professional painters throughout Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Javier learned interiors from the surface inward: color, preparation, texture, proportion, light and the craftsmanship concealed beneath a beautifully finished room.

Painting led to decorative treatments, Venetian plaster and increasingly sophisticated architectural finishes. Then, a Park Avenue client entrusted him with the complete transformation of her dining room. That project changed the direction of his career. One residence led to another, and clients frequently became longtime friends.

THE DESIGNER WHO NEVER PUT DOWN THE BRUSH

Success never separated Javier from the craft that introduced him to design.

More than three decades later, he remains as comfortable developing the complete vision for a residence as he is working directly with plaster, pigment and architectural finishes.

That combination is increasingly rare. Javier understands how a room should feel—and how every surface, proportion and detail must be executed to achieve it.

For him, design and craftsmanship have never been separate disciplines.

A PRIVATE PRACTICE ACROSS EXTRAORDINARY PLACES

Relationships and referrals carried Javier’s work beyond Manhattan to distinguished communities throughout the United States and Europe.

His projects have included residences in the Hamptons, Greenwich, Beverly Hills, Montecito, Atherton, Palm Beach and other exceptional locations, as well as work in Zürich, Brussels, Luxembourg and Costa Rica.

The locations changed. His approach did not: personal attention, uncompromising standards and interiors shaped around the people who live within them.

PRIVACY BY INSTINCT

Javier never pursued the path of the celebrity designer. He deliberately maintained a personal practice, remaining close to his clients and to the work itself.

Some clients entrusted him with several residences. Professional relationships developed into genuine friendships lasting many years. Yet despite working inside extraordinary homes, Javier never believed that access entitled him to publicize the people who lived there.

Some designers build highly visible public profiles. Javier Chacone built private relationships.

Much of his finest work therefore remained exactly what it was intended to be: private.

More than three decades after that first Park Avenue dining room, Javier still approaches every residence with the same philosophy. He still notices the finish on a wall. He still enjoys working with his hands. And he still believes that being invited into someone’s home is a privilege.
